Flipping the language classroom using Moodle

Class time is often consumed by tedious grammar explanations and lectures on writing conventions. As a result, students often lack practice with these new concepts, experiencing a reduced chance of output necessary for language development (Nation & Macalister, 2010). In a flipped classroom, students view videos, complete tutorials, read texts, etc. outside class, allowing more time for oral production and interaction in class (Herreid & Schiller, 2013). This presentation will examine how various asynchronous components of Moodle such as glossaries, forums, and wikis can be used to implement the concept of a flipped classroom in L2 education.

He conducts research on the second language (L2) acquisition of phonology, morphosyntax and vocabulary, and the effects of computer technology (e.g., clickers, text-to-speech synthesizers, automatic speech recognition) on L2 learning.
